balance aims to create an accessible democracy for all by streamlining the democratic process for everyday citizens. How do we plan on accomplishing that? Essentially, we're working hard to prioritize political activism in the digital age rather than simply creating another platform for political discourse to take place.

Currently, much of the conversation around the intersection between politics and the tech has centered around traditional social media companies not being up to the task of monitoring hate speech. Social media companies have been accused of being unable to carry out productive discourse around the pressing issues of our time but instead, abetting prejudices and biases by creating echo chambers. The truth is, regardless of the algorithms and newest technology that is being implemented at any one of these companies, unfortunately, there will always be cracks in the system. It's unrealistic to think that any entity would be able to accurately and efficiently root out improper and inappropriate discourse at all times.
So instead, we've focused our efforts with balance entirely on creating a platform that promotes activism rather than simply being a place for discourse to take place. Our reasons?

1. Quite frankly, talk is cheap. Anyone can talk about politics, but how many are actually rolling up their sleeves and having a real, discernible impact on the issues they care about? Everybody has an opinion. Few have an impact. That's what balance intends to fix.

We want to provide a digital organizing space where people can focus their efforts around a specific issue and carry out a strategic approach for achieving change. We want to provide an outlet for citizens to have access to who their local and federal elected representatives and have clear communication channels with them.

2. Social media -- as a whole -- will continue to trend towards experiences rather than passive following. If this pandemic has taught us anything, it's that -- theoretically -- maybe we can get by through carrying out the vast majority of our communicating through digital means. But, that doesn't mean that we want to. We want to get out of the house and have real experiences. We want to experience a range of emotions in person and interact with others in a more personal manner. That's why we want balance to serve as a springboard for connecting people beyond just digital communication and towards real, grassroots organizing that produces change on the ground.
We want balance to be the starting point for creating a new generation of activists that are now spending their weekends knocking on doors, protesting and organizing. That's because we believe, fundamentally, a participatory democracy is a working democracy.
